A donation from the Wain Foundation has enabled the construction of a purpose-built specialist school in West Lancashire.
The Rainbow Hub School in Mawdesley was developed for children with special educational needs due to physical and neurological disabilities. Just two months after the first pupils enrolled last September, it was rated ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED inspectors.
The school builds on the success of the charity’s nursery school and therapy centre and is initially offering places to children aged four to 11 years. There are currently seven children attending with space for a further 25 places following approval from Department for Education and this will later extend to offer places for young people up to 16 years.

It has been developed for children with physical/neurological disabilities whose families struggle to find an environment that can meet their physical, social and learning needs. 
The school has four classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, two additional therapy rooms, accessible life skills kitchen, outdoor classroom, new meeting spaces and a dedicated parent/carers room.  
Solar panels and air source heat pumps with mechanical heating ensure a constant temperature.
Designed in neutral colours for a calming effect, all education and therapy rooms have an H track ceiling hoist and classrooms contain both education and therapy equipment making them multi-purpose.

“This development will allow us to extend the good work we already do in conductive education and our specialist nursery. It will allow us to provide support to children who may sometimes be over-looked but deserve every opportunity to become as independent as possible."

One Year On For The Rainbow Hub

The new school building for the Rainbow Hub at Mawdesley has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the foundations and the steelwork.

The new school building for the Rainbow Hub at Mawdesley has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the foundations and the steelwork.
Work can now begin on the brickwork for the new two-storey building which is being funded by a £5m donation from the Wain Foundation.
It will allow this excellent centre to extend the school provision for children aged 5 – 16 years who need physical help but can follow an academic curriculum. 
Rainbow Hub Chief Executive Lyndsay Fahey said: “I stood on the first floor of the new building with The Wain Foundation chairman Bill Ainscough, just before Christmas and it is so wonderful to see it coming together. The donation from Wain Foundation is helping us to build something truly incredible for children with physical disabilities. “
Work is on schedule to complete this summer and pupils will be using the new Ofsted approved facilities from September.
Lyndsay added: “The hoisting design has been finalised, as has the adapted kitchen and rebound therapy room and we are looking at interior design which is really exciting.  
“Our first pupil starts on 19th February 2024 with more to hopefully follow in March, which is really positive. We are also starting to recruit school staff to help us deliver this excellent provision. It is a very exciting time.”
Designed by Seven Architects, the build is being carried out by TMT Construction.

To further celebrate the company’s 50th year in business we are very proud to announce the launch of the Wain Foundation.
Every year a percentage of the Wain Group profits will be distributed through the Foundation to support charities in the UK regions in which we operate, the North West, Severn Valley and South West. 
The Foundation will be administered by a Board of Trustees with a broad range of experience, with Wain Group founder Bill Ainscough appointed as chairman.
He said: “As a property company, we physically help communities develop and grow and feel it is important to support them on a wider level to prosper and thrive by directing support to those who need it most. 
“I am honoured to become Chairman of the trustees of the Foundation and I am determined to ensure it makes a real difference to many people’s lives.”
The main focus will be on charities working on specific projects or campaigns that help improve the lives of children and young people. 
The Foundation has announced its first donation of £5million to fund the construction and fit-out of a pioneering school for children with special educational needs in the North West, close to where the company first began.
Based in Mawdesley in Lancashire, Rainbow Hub currently offers six places to children aged 5-11 years who have physical needs but can follow an academic curriculum. The donation will allow the provision to be significantly extended offering places to approximately 21 children aged 5 – 16 years. 
There will be several therapy rooms, a ground level Rebound Therapy trampoline and an accessible life skills room. The building has been designed with shared spaces which will be used by all the services across Rainbow Hub with a room available for parents as a social area.
The new building is scheduled for completion in June 2024, ready for opening in September 2024. 
Bill added: “The school does amazing work and we are really pleased to be able to support this next stage of its much-needed provision.
“Going forward we are excited to see what other organisations and projects the Foundation can support to help communities thrive together.”

Wain Group Launches the Wain Foundation

A 12-strong team from Wain Estates teamed up with Groundwork Greater Manchester for a day of environmental action at Trafford Ecology Park.

A 12-strong team from Wain Estates teamed up with Groundwork Greater Manchester for a day of environmental action at Trafford Ecology Park.
The Park is a peaceful oasis of greenery hidden away at the heart of the busy industrial estate, providing a welcome escape for many workers with a pathway around a lake and the opportunities to hold meetings in a specially created ‘Meeting Place’.
It also hosts Forest School sessions for local school children.
But much of the park had become overgrown making access difficult in the school area and Groundwork asked Wain Estates for help through our Helping Hands volunteering scheme.
Led by Wain Group Executive Chairman Will Ainscough, and Wain Estates’ directors Mark Booth, Jack Brister, Peter Ainscough and Paul Wrigglesworth, the team was kept busy clearing pathways, building reading dens for the children and cutting back branches and overgrown vegetation.
They also cleared one of the Forest Schools breakout areas, which had been overgrown with weeds and brambles, to make it more accessible and child friendly.
The day ended with a challenge to create the best bug hotel to help encourage insects and biodiversity within the park.
The Crawley Towers’ team of Rachael Davies, Jack Brister, Lynne Kennedy-White, Kevin Fletcher, Mike Jones and Mark Booth won the day with a ‘hotel’ design that boasts lots of different areas for the different bugs, including access ramps, slides, swimming pools, terraces, even walkways down from the trees.
Director Jack Brister, said: “It was hugely rewarding to spend the day helping to improve this vital resource to encourage biodiversity and support the local environment. It is already well used and shows the importance of well-maintained green spaces within the community.
“A group of school children walked past at the end and started exploring the area we had just cleared which was a great endorsement of our efforts and also the work of the Groundwork Team.”
The Ecology Park is close to the large former Shell refinery site at Carrington which Wain Estates is remediating and redeveloping with new homes, new employment areas and new village hubs surrounded by improved open spaces.
Natalie Ross from Greater Manchester who co-ordinated the day said: “We are extremely grateful for the help of the Wain Estates team for their help preserving Trafford Ecology Park. We rely on volunteers to make this space enjoyable for visitors and a safe haven for nature and hope that other businesses will be inspired to support this cause in the future.”
